Our condolences to the Loyd family with the passing of Mr. Tom Loyd. Tom and the Loyd family have tremendous roots in Carthage and the Carthage golf community. Tom’s father, Edd, was a longtime golf professional at Carthage Golf Course. Tom’s sister, Pam Borland, is an active member in the Carthage Women’s Golf Association and regular golfer at Carthage Golf Course. Tom’s brother, Steve, has a tremendous golf history and background as well. So many players at Carthage have known Tom and his family. The Loyd family and their ties to golf reach well beyond Carthage and southwest Missouri. While traveling around the state and region when the talk of golf and Carthage come up there is always a shared memory of a happening with a member of the Loyd family. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Tom Loyd, 67, of Columbia, MO, passed away unexpectedly on March 14, 2018. Tom was a
son, brother, uncle, and friend in addition to being an amateur photographer, astronomer, and
historian. He was to many, a confidant, mentor, teacher, coach, instructor, and US Army
Veteran.
Born in Carthage, MO, Dec. 22, 1950, Tom was a Carthage High graduate 1968 and the 1968
Missouri High School State Champion in golf. Tom attended the University of Missouri and
graduated in 1972. He was a 4-year letter winner and a member of the Mizzou Golf team ’68-72.
Tom played as a freshman and alongside his older brother Steve who was a senior at the time.
While serving in the U.S. Army and stationed in Alaska, Tom won the 1974 Alaska State
Amateur title. Later, he returned to Columbia permanently after he received his honorable
discharge from the US Army in 1976. He was an Assistant Professional and Head Pro at the
Country Club of Missouri from ‘77-90 as well as serving as the Mizzou men’s and women’s
assistant golf coach from ’77-97. Tom then served as the Mizzou Women’s Golf Head Coach
from ’98-01. Upon his retirement in ’01, Tom pursued his passion for photography, history, and
travel. He was inducted into the Columbia, MO Golf Foundation Hall of Fame in 2016. Tom
continued to teach and play the game of golf at A.L. Gustin G.C. up until the time of his death.
Tom had a lasting impact on many in Columbia and abroad as a golf coach and instructor to
juniors, the men, and women who played for him at Mizzou and to many other golfers lucky
enough to be taught by him over the years.
Tom, a gentle soul, will be remembered for his witty, dry sense of humor and his unflinching
honesty and integrity. He has left an indelible mark on so many in the Missouri golfing
community and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by
his parents Edd and Irene Loyd of Carthage, MO and Bryan (Skip) Taylor of Shawnee, KS. He
leaves behind a sister, Pam Borland (husband Gary) of Carthage, MO, a brother, Steve Loyd of
Kansas City, MO, Andi Taylor, niece of Camdenton, Mo, Josh Taylor and family, nephew of
Olathe, KS and Jolene Loyd, niece of Kansas City, MO.
A celebration of T. Loyd’s life is set for March 30, 2018, from 6 to 9 p.m. at D. Rowe’s Bar &
Grill 1005 Club Village Dr. Columbia, MO 65203. Friends, golf community, and Mizzou family
are welcome.
In Lieu of flowers and keeping with Tom’s love and dedication to the game of golf, please donate
your money and or time to your local junior golf program or the Columbia, MO Golf Foundation.

Check out the Carthage Golf Course App. We just finished the initial work and have a lot of great features for you to use. Free GPS, scoring and much much more. When you download and set it up please allow push notifications and location. That will help us give you the best experience with the App. It is ready to download now at the Apple App store and the Google Play Store or click HERE to take you there.

I cant wait to use the live scoring feature with some our events. The ability to see all of the teams or individuals in real-time will be a pretty cool feature!

The Joplin Golf Foundation needs the best players within a 60 mile radius of Joplin to compete in the Joplin Area Championship. We had a great event last year held at Carthage and Briarbrook. 2016 Champions are Griffen Locke in the regular division and Glen Keeton in the Senior division. The Joplin Golf Foundation will crown two more Champions and put together the Joplin Horton Smith and Ky Laffoon teams that will take on Springfield over the weekend of August 19th and 20th. The matches will be in Springfield this year.

Please let me know if I can answer any questions.              Print Entry Form!

Thank you to everybody whom has signed up for the Red, White and Boom tomorrow. Another full field and several on the waiting list. Thank you for making it a special event. We have added some additional spots to the payback. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and we will get the tournament in on schedule! Our Eagle is going to keep that rain away. Have a great and safe Fourth of July!

Do you remember playing in junior golf tournaments growing up? I played in several. My favorite was always trying to qualify for the Optimist National Championship. The first tee was the most frightening experience ever at the time… Below is how I would prepare.

Day/Night before –

  1. Play 18 holes with my brother. He was the best competition around.
  2. Go to range and hit balls. You can really dial it in when you are trying to hit the range picker as it is moving. Difficult to work on alignment…just a feel thing.
  3. Wash clubs and grips trying to get all of the dirt and rust off so you could read Sam Snead Blue Ridge on them. Those leather grips were a doozy to keep nice. They had a big build up of spray stickum on them that would eventually turn rock hard.
  4. Clean shoes. Back then my golf shoes had that big flap thing over the laces. We need that style back!
  5. Look for better golf balls then the ones I had. I would go to Edgewood GC located right along the Red River in Fargo, ND.  My brother and I would try to find the best ProStaff balls we could.
  6. Get a good night sleep. I would grab the Austad’s catalog and circle all of the golf items I wanted. Wilson Tour Block woods and Titleist Tour Model irons. I would circle the Jones bag I had my eye on and the big fuzzy head covers. I would zonk out dreaming of the FJ shoes with the fancy toe designs and the extra steel spike in the middle of them.

The morning of the tournament.

  1. Eat breakfast with my brother while talking trash.
  2. Pray for a good pairing.
  3. Warm up at the range always finishing with a cut driver. The same shot the needed to be hit off the first tee.
  4. Shake hands with other 12 year olds in that awkward way of youth hand shakes.
  5. Butterflies…hoping not to top that first tee ball.

Crazy thing…. we would get off the first tee and start playing. All of the nervousness would go away. We would play and have a blast. We would talk about what time we were going to ride our bikes to the muni pool in the afternoon. We would talk about our baseball team and the game we had that night. All those nerves would go away pretty fast after that first tee ball.

I wonder if the kids who played in the 54th Annual Carthage Junior Golf Tournament had the same routine. Check out their awesome scores.

Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to our winners!

My birthday is July 4th. When I was growing up my family would tell me everybody was celebrating my birthday. Grandma Nell would have a Hamburger cake made for me. We would go to a park in Moorhead, Minnesota and celebrate my birthday with all of the other people I didn’t know who were celebrating my birthday. I was 4 years old and I believed it! Now I spend my birthday playing golf with friends at our Red, White and Boom Three Person Scramble. Fun, great prizes and payback and celebrate the fourth (my birthday…please buy me a mulligan). Check it though the links here and sign up!

Cleo bunker running again!

Cleo tried signing up again this year. I told her… once she could rake the bunkers on her own I would sign her up. I don’t have long to teach her that skill. Maybe I wont count her age in dog years. We might make it sometime then. Give her a couple more years.

Those that have played the Dick Mansfield Memorial Golf Tournament for several years affectionately call it “The Mansfield”. It has been a staple of our tournament schedule for sometime now. I look forward to it every year. I look forward to seeing people come out to the event that want to share the memory of Dick Mansfield. Several entries are friends or relatives whom keep coming back to share stories and events that happened with Dick Mansfield. Some have made it every year and some support it through sponsorships of the event.

Many of the teams are part of our Carthage Men’s Golf Association as well. This is part of the CMGA event schedule as well as open to the public. Dick was a CMGA Member all of the years I have been in Carthage as the PGA Professional. It is a key event for the CMGA as well.

The Mansfield is the main fundraiser for the Carthage High School Boys and Girls Golf Program. Coach Lowell Catron does a fantastic job building this program from the ground up. It starts with a solid youth program that teaches the basic fundamentals and skills needed to start in the game. Youth begin in the 3rd to 8th grade years. The earlier the better. Coach Catron works with these players from early on advising them on summer events and practice routines to keep them improving in the game. He has contact with them every summer. As long as they continue to come to the youth programs and opportunities presented he stays in touch with them. When they hit 8th grade they have the opportunity to start practicing with the team. Sometimes when they are in seventh grade if they show the desire. The summer before they are freshmen they become eligible to join the high school summer team camp. It is an intensive practice and play schedule to help the players improve their skills for the upcoming season. He has a great program for the boys and girls teams.

I consider him the best high school coach in Missouri. Probably the entire US. The Carthage golf community is proud of Coach Catron and the golf program he has for the boys and girls at Carthage High School. Its another reason “The Mansfield” has such good support. All of the proceeds for “The Mansfield” are used for the Carthage High School golf programs. The funds help with many things from equipment, team apparel and travel expenses to a few extra treats here and there after a tournament. There is nothing wrong with a few extras when the kids are working hard and the coach is working even harder.

“The Mansfield”…a great day to remember Dick Mansfield, a great fundraiser for the Carthage High School golf programs and all of the things you want in a Two Person Scramble…food, fun, refreshments and great prizes.

Take off Friday afternoon June 16th and join us at Carthage Golf Course for “The Mansfield”
