A few things could keep you from getting spin on the ball.

  • Poor contact…probably not though. We all practice too much for that to happen.
  • Dirt in the grooves…wrong again. We all diligently clean our clubs after each shot.
  • Poorly fit wedges. The wrong bounce and grind could have some impact on the contact you make with your wedges. Get fit for sure.
  • Worn out grooves. 75 rounds may be the magic number to replace wedges with some fresh grooves.

I think most of us know the main reason we don’t spin the ball is from poor contact. I also see a lot of dirty grooves while I am working with students on their short game. Keep them clean and keep them dry prior to a shot. lets throw those factors out the window though. They are manageable variables in getting the ball to stop. If your wedges are poorly fit or you have more than 75 rounds on them in might be time to replace those wedges.

Left is fresh…right is 75 rounds. I’d like to make that spot in the middle.

If you decide its time to replace the old for some new wedges then let’s get you fit as well. At Carthage Golf Course we have all of the resources to fit you correctly for wedges and give you an opportunity to use the different loft, grinds and bounce angles in a practice session or on the course. We have a dozen demo/fitting wedges to dial in the right one for you. We have Pro V1 practice balls to use in a fitting and for your trial use of the correctly fit wedge. Maybe you just want to come and try several out at our short game practice green. Take the bag of wedges and the shag bag of V1’s and give them a go.

When you are ready to make the move to new wedges let’s do it right!

It is time to aerate greens again. The springtime nuisance all golfers deal with. As a player I say nuisance. As a golf course operator I know it is a needed maintenance practice to help maintain quality greens. Kurt Neubert, our GCSAA Superintendent, and Joe Nevills, our incoming GCSAA Superintendent, when Kurt retires in July, have worked diligently to make this a smooth process for the golfers. We will close on March 27th in an effort to get as far as possible in the process without disruption. On March 28th we will have the front 9 open and the back nine closed.

The decision of when to aerate greens in mainly based on weather. The greens need to be actively growing for the healing process to begin. While we continue to mow and roll most days there has not been real active growth even with the nice February and March weather. Some rain this week with the warm temps should do the trick.

Below is an article from our friends at the USGA that explains the need to aerate.

The word aeration stimulates negative emotions for many golfers. It may come as a surprise, but golf course superintendents also dislike aeration. After all, the last person who wants to disrupt the smoothness of the putting greens they work so hard to maintain is the superintendent.

Golfers often ask, “Why is aeration needed so often?” Aeration is an essential program to keep playing surfaces healthy and in good condition. Aeration primarily is performed to control organic matter – i.e., decaying roots and grass stems – relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation. Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure. Furthermore, excessive organic matter creates soft surfaces prone to ball marks, foot printing and inconsistent playing conditions. Aeration and topdressing are the most effective ways to control organic matter and maintain smooth, firm putting surfaces.

Core aeration involves physically removing small soil cores – e.g., 0.5-inch diameter cores – from the turf and is the most common type of aeration. Aeration holes allow excess moisture to evaporate and promote gas exchange in the soil, resulting in stronger root systems and turf that is better able to tolerate golfer traffic.

Proper timing of aeration will ensure the fastest possible recovery and return to smooth surface conditions. The key to a quick recovery is to perform aeration when the turf is healthy and actively growing. The articles, Core Cultivation: Timing is Everything and Easing the Pain of Core Aeration expand on proper aeration timing. There are many types of aeration that superintendents use throughout the season; some are more labor-intensive and disruptive to playing surfaces than others. Less-disruptive forms of aeration, including venting aeration with small-diameter, solid tines, also are beneficial because they can alleviate turf stress by promoting oxygen levels in the soil. Aeration programs that have a small impact on a playing surface generally can be performed throughout the season with little or no disruption to play.

The type and frequency of aeration needed is course specific. Superintendents adjust aeration programs based on soil conditions, turf requirements, climate/weather, available labor and equipment, course events, etc.

Aeration can create short-lived disruption but it is a highly beneficial program that keeps greens healthy and playing well.

Playing conditions are of the utmost importance for most golfers, and aeration is needed to keep turf healthy and playing well. Aeration can be disruptive, but the long-term benefits of aeration far outweigh the short-lived disruption. The next time you play on greens that were recently aerated, keep in mind that aeration is performed for the long-term health of the course. The greens may not play their best immediately following some aeration treatments, but everyone is playing the same conditions and golfers still can enjoy the game and make plenty of putts. After all, Tom Watson once shot a 58 when playing at Kansas City Country Club just a few days after the greens had been aerified.

8 New Models

  • Futura 5W -Update to the X5 with multi-material face-sole technology.
  • Futura 5S – In response to Tour feedback, Scotty has created the straight-shafted 5S, similar to the 7M.
  • Futura 6M – High Tech, High MOI model with multi-material face-sole technology, similar to the putter Adam Scott is currently using.
  • Futura 6M Dual Balance – DB version of Futura 6M with same High Tech, High MOI with multi-material face-sole technology.
  • Futura 7M – Largest head shape of the Futura family. Update of the X7M.
  • Futura CB –  Rounded cavity back mid-mallet with multi-material face-sole technology.
  • Futura MB – Rounded muscle back mid-mallet with multi-material face-sole technology.
  • Select Newport 3 – Small heel shafted mallet, similar to a cross between a Del Mar and GoLo3.

FUTURA MODEL OVERVIEW: The new Futura models are identified by shape and size using a 5, 6 and 7 numbering system. Higher numbers indicate larger sizes:

  • Futura 5CB and Futura 5MB are elegant, rounded mid-mallets that blend Scotty’s decades long design aesthetic that a putter “should melt into the ground” with multi-material face-sole technology. Classic meets modern with the Futura 5CB, a rounded “cavity back” with face-sole technology, a pop-through black anodized 6061 aircraft aluminum flange plate and single milled sight line on the topline. Futura 5MB features an elegant “muscle back” design with face-sole technology, a refined, rounded 303 stainless steel back flange and a single milled sight line.
  • Futura 5W and Futura 5S improve upon the popular aspects of the prior generation Futura X5 and Futura X7M models, respectively. The Futura 5W (“W” for “wing”) is a modern wingback mallet with a full wrap-around multi-material face-sole. Enhanced dual-purpose alignment features frame the ball and align to the sweet spot with white flange lines placed parallel to each wing. Futura 5S (“S” for “straight shaft”) features a pop-through “bar back” design that moves weight farther behind the putter face for higher MOI, along with a straight shaft setup inspired by tour feedback. Dual-purpose alignment frames the ball and aligns to the sweet spot. The 5S is similar in shape to the Futura 7M but in the more compact “5” size.
  • Inspired by Scotty’s extensive work with Adam Scott, the Futura 6M (“M” for “MOI”) introduces the best MOI-enhancing traits of the original Futura X model in conjunction with design cues expressed in the Futura X7M, combining a pop-through “bar back” design with deep heel-toe weights for the ultimate in forgiveness and resistance to twisting at impact. Dual-purpose alignment frames the ball and aligns to the sweet spot. A new Futura 6M Dual Balance model is also available for those players who need maximum stability in their stroke. Like all Dual Balance models, the Futura 6M DB has a 50-gram heavier head and a 50-gram counterweight in the grip end of the shaft.
  • The Futura 7M improves upon the Futura X7M with refined shaping of the back wings, including the stainless steel “bar back” that moves weight behind the putter face for added forgiveness. Dual-purpose alignment frames the ball and aligns to the sweet spot. The 7M is similar in shape to the Futura 5S but in the larger “7” size.
  • Left-Handed options will be available in the Futura 5CB and Futura 6M models.

Each new Futura putter features advanced stability weighting with two removable, customizable stainless steel sole weights, stepless steel shafts and supple Black Matador Mid-size grips with red and gold accents (Futura 6M DB employs a 15-inch Dual Balance grip) developed to offer the comfort of a larger grip while maintaining responsiveness and feel.

MODERN AESTHETICS: Scotty gave the Futura line’s raw stainless steel surfaces a Silver Mist finish with a unique bead blast for a radiant yet glare-resistant appearance. All aluminum sole plates have been anodized in black. Additionally, the Tour-inspired cosmetics display the familiar three bright translucent red dots in the back cavity with engraved typography befitting this modern, high-performance line.

Joplin Golf Foundation

Horton Smith High School Invitational

The Joplin Golf Foundation is asking for your help to provide scholarship opportunities for our area high school senior golfers. The Joplin Golf Foundation (JGF) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The primary mission of the JGF is promoting golf to our area of southwest Missouri. The JGF hosts many different golf events that include the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame Tournament, the Joplin Area Championship and the Horton Smith / Ky Laffoon matches held annually with Springfield. The pride of the JGF is the summer junior golf program. This program provides instruction and playing opportunities to the youth of our area at no cost to their families. The number of youth golfers in the program fluctuates annually and has seen as many as 300 juniors show up to learn the game.

Help Grow the Game You Love!

In 2016 the JGF invited the area high school golf coaches and their team members to help instruct and supervise these young golfers in conjunction with area PGA Golf Professionals and several volunteers from the golf community. In return the JGF has made a commitment to supporting these coaches, their players and their high school golf programs by enhancing these instruction and playing opportunities for our youth. Effectively creating more player opportunities for their programs as well. In many cases these coaches will be involved with them from the beginner level to the high school level.

The JGF is hosting the Horton Smith High School Invitational on April 10th at Schifferdecker Golf Course. High school golf teams within all four classes in our region have been invited. This will be an opportunity to showcase all of the golf talent from our area in one event. We will recognize the team champions and runner up and well as the top 10 individuals that will also make the Joplin Junior Horton Smith Team. This team will represent the Joplin area in matches against a Springfield team this summer. The JGF would like to establish a premier high school event for the golf programs in our area, their coaches and the players.

One more way the JGF is giving support to these high school programs is through scholarships for seniors in the Horton Smith Invitational field. This is where we need the golf community support! These seniors will provide a resume highlighting their academic and golf accomplishments. This year the JGF will award a minimum of four $500 scholarships for these seniors. It is our goal to provide more. That is where you have an opportunity to help. Please review the sponsorship opportunities available. The golf community in southwest Missouri is a tremendous supporter of junior golf. As a golfer you have understood the benefits of the game in your life. The JGF is trying to provide the opportunity for all of our area youth to experience those same wonderful benefits of the game. A game for a lifetime!

Thank you in advance for your help.

How to Get Kids Involved in The Game!

My parents started myself and my older brother, Paul, in golf at an early age. We had Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge clubs that were too heavy and too tall for us. We didn’t know it though. They were awesome. There weren’t any “real” junior clubs back then. Cut down clubs were normal back then. Now we have US Kids clubs and many others that help the junior golfers get the ball in the air. Lots of low missiles with those old Sam Snead clubs.
We started at Braemar Golf Course in Edina, Minnesota. That’s right Minnesota! Braemar had a practice range, practice green, 9-hole par 3 course and an 18-hole course. A great public facility that had it all. My parents, Daryl and Diane, put us in a junior program at Braemar. We loved it. The golf pro started us with good fundamentals. Grip, stance, posture etc… Start with the short shots and work back. Like all the kids I just wanted to hit the driver and see how far it could go. We learned to play on the 9-hole course as well. Etiquette…manners on the course. We had to learn how to respect the golf course, respect players in our group and be aware of others on the course. The golf pro didn’t want us to hold anybody up. Imagine that…be aware of others and respect their space.
We graduated junior golf by playing 9 holes on the par 3 course, finishing in 1 ½ hours (wow) and keeping a score. All while having three other players in a group with us and walking. It was hit the ball and go, but don’t get in front of anybody– or else! That was so much fun. We got to hit balls, play golf and hang out with other kids who wanted to do the same thing. We would do that then go to the pool in the afternoon. Baseball and soccer practice would come after that in the evening. Those were the days.

I must have lost to my brother with that smile on his face. Man…I would like to have the cool visor again.

Golf has always been part of my life. I was born in Fargo, ND (Go Bison!). We moved to Edina when I was very young. We moved back to Fargo before I was in 5th grade. In Fargo, we had Edgewood Golf Course. Golf in the summer. Tube the hills in the winter. The clubhouse was the winter warming house for the tubers and cross country skiers. Milkshakes in the summer and then hot chocolate in the winter. We moved to Louisville, KY right before my sophomore year in high school. Long Run Golf Course and Seneca Golf Course became our new golf home. The summer of ’85 we moved to Springfield, MO. Grandview Golf Course is where most of my days were spent with my brother. It is now Bill and Payne Stewart Golf Course. Everywhere we moved the first thing we did was look for a golf course. It was a family activity for us. I remember the first time I beat my dad, my mom and my brother. I think my dad and mom wanted me to beat them, but my brother still won’t admit that I have ever beat him. We had great times on the course as a family.

Big brother Adam congratulating Derek for All State Honors at 2011 Class 4 State Championship.

I have always been grateful to my parents for starting me in golf. Golf has helped me learn many valuable life skills and taught me many lessons over the years. I met my beautiful wife through golf. I have had the opportunity to introduce my three children to golf. They all love it in their own way. Hopefully I will get the chance to show their children the game and get them involved in golf.

Shannon and I at the 1993 Ozark Open. Happy to be smiling after a couple of poor rounds.

I could go on and on about golf and the value of the game to me. Let’s find a way to get your children and grandchildren in the game!
Make no mistake about it, getting your kids involved in golf will be one of the greatest and most valuable gifts

Allison in her first junior tournament.

you will ever give them!

Here is why-

My friend Andrew Wood started this Top Ten list. I modified it a little bit.

1. Anyone Can Play: Golfers come in all shapes and sizes. You don’t have to be particularly strong, tall, lean or fast to succeed. Golf champions come in every shape and size imaginable. It’s never too early to start, and unlike most other sports, you can enjoy golf your entire life!
2. Minimal Risk: Unlike many other popular sports like baseball, soccer, and Football, the chances of injury, especially serious injury, are almost non-existent; golf is a non-contact sport.
3. Safe and positive environment: The golf course is a safe place and facilitates mentoring relationships.
4. Lifelong friendships: You never know who you will meet on a golf course, but it’s one of the easiest places in the world to make friends. Success breeds success and people who play golf are by in large more successful than the average bear. Those are the people you want your kids hanging out with! Best of all, golf creates a unique bond so those friendships can be developed all over the world and last a lifetime!
5. Prepare for business: It’s hard to think about it now but kids grow up and the people they meet as children can play a huge part in their success later in life. Golf is a sport that helps prepare kids and teens for careers in business and other professional arenas. Even at 12, I was learning about real life business every day from all the adults I played with.
6. Time Spent Outdoors: In today’s world of video games, smartphones, and child obesity, it can be hard to drag your son or daughter off the couch. Golf is the perfect excuse to spend an entire day enjoying nature and presents the opportunity to develop healthy lifelong exercise habits!
7. Important Life Lessons: Golf closely parallels real life as one experiences the highs and lows of the game. The range of experience, from birdies to bogeys, rewards a young person’s ability to keep each shot in perspective, manage one’s emotions, maintain a positive outlook and focus on the shot at hand. Golf is a sport that will teach your child things like integrity, discipline, and respect. As they learn to conduct themselves on the golf course, these lessons will translate directly into everyday life.
8. College Scholarships: Avid golfers have a lot of opportunities when it comes to college funding. The earlier your child starts, the greater his or her chance is of gaining access to scholarship money.

9. Spend time with family: Golf is a game that encourages family participation. When children are young, they enjoy doing just about anything with you (but it doesn’t long last so start now). Golf is an opportunity for quality bonding time and it’s one that can last a lifetime.
10. It’s FUN: This should probably be at the top of the list, but one of the best reasons to get your son or daughter involved with golf is that they’ll have an absolute blast. They’ll have the chance to learn new skills both physical and mental, make new friends, and discover new opportunities.
There are a million things you can buy your kids or gift your kids in the hope that it helps them learn and grow, only a few make a real impact.
Encouraging them to play golf is one!
I believe golf has made an amazing difference to my life. I made golf a career. I am not suggesting you have to do that. I just hope golf can provide some of the things mentioned above to you, your children and your grandchildren. Give them a chance. They might just like it for a lifetime!
