Joplin Golf Foundation

Horton Smith High School Invitational

The Joplin Golf Foundation is asking for your help to provide scholarship opportunities for our area high school senior golfers. The Joplin Golf Foundation (JGF) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The primary mission of the JGF is promoting golf to our area of southwest Missouri. The JGF hosts many different golf events that include the Joplin Golf Hall of Fame Tournament, the Joplin Area Championship and the Horton Smith / Ky Laffoon matches held annually with Springfield. The pride of the JGF is the summer junior golf program. This program provides instruction and playing opportunities to the youth of our area at no cost to their families. The number of youth golfers in the program fluctuates annually and has seen as many as 300 juniors show up to learn the game.

Help Grow the Game You Love!

In 2016 the JGF invited the area high school golf coaches and their team members to help instruct and supervise these young golfers in conjunction with area PGA Golf Professionals and several volunteers from the golf community. In return the JGF has made a commitment to supporting these coaches, their players and their high school golf programs by enhancing these instruction and playing opportunities for our youth. Effectively creating more player opportunities for their programs as well. In many cases these coaches will be involved with them from the beginner level to the high school level.

The JGF is hosting the Horton Smith High School Invitational on April 10th at Schifferdecker Golf Course. High school golf teams within all four classes in our region have been invited. This will be an opportunity to showcase all of the golf talent from our area in one event. We will recognize the team champions and runner up and well as the top 10 individuals that will also make the Joplin Junior Horton Smith Team. This team will represent the Joplin area in matches against a Springfield team this summer. The JGF would like to establish a premier high school event for the golf programs in our area, their coaches and the players.

One more way the JGF is giving support to these high school programs is through scholarships for seniors in the Horton Smith Invitational field. This is where we need the golf community support! These seniors will provide a resume highlighting their academic and golf accomplishments. This year the JGF will award a minimum of four $500 scholarships for these seniors. It is our goal to provide more. That is where you have an opportunity to help. Please review the sponsorship opportunities available. The golf community in southwest Missouri is a tremendous supporter of junior golf. As a golfer you have understood the benefits of the game in your life. The JGF is trying to provide the opportunity for all of our area youth to experience those same wonderful benefits of the game. A game for a lifetime!

Thank you in advance for your help.

Horton Smith Invitational Information

2017 will be the first year of what we hope will be a premier high school boys golf event for the area.  The Joplin Golf Foundation would like to accomplish a few goals with this event. The first goal is to have a high school boys event showcasing all of the area talent in one significant event. We will recognize the top two teams as well as the top 10 individuals. The second goal is selecting the Junior Horton Smith team representing the Joplin area. This team will play a team from the Springfield area in late July. This competition has gone on for many years. The Joplin Golf Foundation is responsible for selecting the Joplin area team. This event would serve as the qualifying event for 10 of the 12 spots available for the team. The top 10 individuals that medal would qualify for the team. The third goal is awarding four $500 scholarships to seniors in the event.
