What a day.

I love the Family Scramble. It is a 2 person scramble. The only catch is that you have to be related. I have played with my son Derek, my daughter Allison and my dad.  I haven’t played with my son Adam yet. Adam is starting to turn into a golf nut. I need to get him down here from Detroit in the next couple of years and play. I never got  the chance to play with my mom before she passed away. My dad and I won once. I think my mom and I would have had a good chance. She knew how to get around the golf course! I have a feeling my wife Shannon will make her way back to golf in the next few years too. Then we will have to give it a try. I want to play with as many of my family members as possible. One problem…. the rest of them all live in Minnesota. What a good reason to come down to Carthage for a weekend.

If you have someone in your family that plays golf please invite them, sign up and come out to play this Saturday. I have seen every kind of combination possible in this event. I had a person who had just become engaged ask if they were eligible to play. I told them they could play but if they don’t make it all the way through the wedding day they will need to return any winnings! Ha…

One of these years I am taking my Chocolate Lab to play. Maybe a stretch of the rules. She would love it!

See you Saturday!

Do you want to see your junior golfer have some fun on the course?

2017 will be the third year that I have captained a PGA Junior League Golf team. I embraced the concept of PGA JLG from the beginning. I had always wanted to have an option for juniors to play golf in competitive but fun low pressure environment with their friends. PGA JLG hit it right on the head!

I have never seen young golfers enjoy the game as much as I have with PGA JLG. Parents and family also get involved in the activities by helping the captains and coaches with different duties at practices and games. Family and friends come out to watch. The golf course is full of people watching these teams play. Its kind of like Little League baseball for golf.

I have listed more information below but please check it all out at PGAJLG.

Here is the basic description –

  • 8-12 player teams of junior golfers from 8-13 years of age.
  • Teams compete in a league with other area PGA JLG teams.
  • Eight practices through the month of May before the league starts in June.
  • One game per week through the season.
  • Post season begins in August with a playoff system that could take you all the way to the national finals.
  • Instruction from PGA Professionals who serve as team captain and are uniquely positioned to create an inviting and welcoming environment for all to enjoy the game of golf!

Format –

  • Scramble – A scramble is a popular format that encourages teamwork and problem solving. Its nurturing nature creates a fun environment where the negative effect of performance errors is minimized.

Each player will tee off at the beginning of each hole. The team then selects their best shot of the two and then each player plays again from the spot of the selected shot. Repeat this process until the ball is in the hole.

The team with the lowest score wins the hole.

  • Game – A game is played between two teams. Depending on who the home team is, in addition to course scheduling and availability, will determine where the game is played.

During the course of a game, four matches are played by at least two players from each team against each other.

The winner of the game is determined by the total number of points won within all matches.

Friends, family and spectators are encouraged to attend and watch – but not participate or aide – each game!

  • Match – A match consists of two teammates (or three, with a substitute) competing against a similar grouping from the opposing team in a fun, nurturing scramble format.

The match lasts for nine holes and is broken up into three 3-hole segments called “flags”.

  • Substitutes – Due to PGA Junior League Golf’s recreational nature, every player on the team is encouraged to participate.

While each match is only actively played by two players from each team at any given time, the team Captain may substitute a player into the match at the start of any flag.

When the player is not one of the two active players in his or her team’s match, they can still play an integral role in the success of their team by reading putts, discussing strategy, tending the flag stick and aiding pace-of-play. At no time should a substitute ever feel left out of the team’s efforts!

  • Flags – Flags are 3-hole segments of each match. Since each match is played over the course of 9 holes, there are three flags per match.

Whichever team wins the most holes within each flag (i.e. 3 holes-to-0 or 2 holes-to-1 hole), wins the corresponding flag.

  • Points – Each flag won by the team is worth one point. Each tied flag won by the team is worth a half point. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Since there are four matches in each game, and each match is played for a maximum of three points, there are a maximum of 12 points total in each game.

Our Joplin League of the PGA JLG still has opening for many players. Our league consists of Carthage Golf Course, Briarbrook Golf Course, Schifferdecker Golf Course and Twin Hills Country Club. We will play 6 games each. We will have practices leading up to the games to prepare all players and usually have one practice between games.

Just for fun!

Pictures provided by Swing by Swing.

Phil or Emilio? Pretty good one here. Put a visor on Emilio and I think they are a match. The real test would be how high he can jump!

Pretty close here too. I can’t see ZJ in Gladiator.

Spacey taking down the Europeans at Hazeltine. I could see that.

I like this. Stenson could be in a courtroom. Bacon could be tough cookie on tour.

The British Bulldog no more. I wasn’t a Monte fan but this is pretty harsh.

I have so many people every year ask “Hey Pro, how do I get my wife into the game?” “Hey Pro, my son just got out of college and now he is interested in golf. How can we get him up to speed?”

Ring Ring – Carthage Golf Course this is Garrett. How can I help you?

Customer – My name is Tracy. I have never played golf before. I started a new job and have been asked to golf with customers and in some charity scrambles. I don’t know anything about golf but it looks fun.  I would like to get started in golf. I have heard Carthage Golf Course has some wonderful instructors. What is available at Carthage Golf Course?

Garrett – The best option for new golfers is our Get Golf Ready programs. The cost is $99 and includes five group lessons. We will cover everything to get you on the golf course playing and feel comfortable in the golf course environment. If you don’t have equipment we will be happy to provide it during the instruction. You can get all of the information HERE.

Tracy – Thank you Garrett. How do I sign up?

Garrett – After reviewing the dates on our website and determining the best option please call me back at 417 237 7030 or you may email me as well at g.roberts@carthagemo.gov.

Many different people can benefit from Get Golf Ready. Lots of golfers have taken some breaks from playing. Get Golf Ready can serve as a great reintroduction to the game. It is for men and women. If you are wanting to get on the golf course and start playing then this is a great program for you.

The Man!

Ten things I always do at some point during Master’s week each year.

10. Make predictions….In 2017 Philly Mick become the oldest winner of the Master’s!

9. Dream of playing number 15 from the same place Chip Beck was during the final round of 1993. Playing with Langer and 3 behind him, Beck decided to lay up with 236 to the front of the green. I am not criticizing Mr. Beck. I just remember falling to the ground shouting go for it, go for it after I saw the 9 iron come out of his bag!

8. Get the water boiling and make some egg salad sandwiches! Everybody talks about the pimento cheese sandwiches at Augusta but I fell in love with the egg salad sandwiches.

One fairway at a time just like this.

7. Think of Greg Norman. 6 stroke lead in 1996…turned into Faldo’s third green jacket.

6. Wonder how many Green Jackets Tiger Woods would have if he never left Butch Harmon and/or Hank Haney. I would assume around 8 to this point.

5. Get up early and stay up late watching the same highlights over and over and over…

I had goose bumps every time I saw them.

4. Keep the extra tab of www.masters.org open on my laptop.

3. Green beer…wait that is St. Patrick’s Day! Oh well green beer two times per year.

2. Turn my phone off on Sunday afternoon.

1. I get out this stack of pictures (around 200) in my office from 1998 and wish I was there again! These are few of my favorites.

Good friends at Augusta! John stuck with the camera.

John was volunteering to take over for Fluff.

If you are not watching the Masters then you better be out at Carthage Golf Course!

The Carthage Men’s Golf Association Opening Day Breakfast and Scramble was blast today. The start was cold but the day got better as it progressed.

Below are some games outside of the traditional skins, nassau and proxy games we see regularly.

Wolf – One of the several variations we have seen at Carthage Golf Course. This would be the tame version of Wolf.

Wolf is a particular game that requires four players, all of which will play independently. The goal is to be the player with the most points at the end. Here’s how it works:

First, the order of play is decided on the first tee. The “Wolf” will always tee off last, with the teeing order rotating, regardless of honor on every hole so each player will be the Wolf every four holes. Once each player in the group hits their tee shots, the Wolf will decide whether or not to take any of the players on their team. If he or she does go this route, the hole will be played two against two with the net best ball score of the pair winning the hole. If the Wolf chooses to go it alone, they’ll be known as the “lone wolf” in which case he or she will need beat the other three players’ net score in order to win the points.

Points are awarded as follows:

If the Wolf chose a partner and they win the hole, they each receive two points.

If the non-Wolf partners win the hole, they get three points each.

If the Lone Wolf beats all the other players, he or she receives four points.

If the Lone Wolf gets beat by any player in the group, everyone in the group except the Lone Wolf receives one point.

There are other variations of the game such as “Blind Wolf” where the Wolf chooses what they want to do prior to the tee shots, as well as another game called Defender that works well for groups of three.

Six-Six-Six, or Sixes (Hollywood or Round Robin)

Sixes is a popular, yet simple game for foursomes. Essentially, you rotate your partner ever six holes creating three separate bets. You can use any scoring format for each six-hole match. The good news is that if you get whipped in one match, you can right the ship in the next one.

Bingo, Bango, Bongo!

Bingo Bango Bongo awards points throughout the round for three different accomplishments:

Bingo – Hitting the green first.

Bango – Being closest to the pin (once all balls are on the green).

Bongo – Being first to hole-out.

At the end of the round, points are totaled and the differences are paid out.

Gruesomes

Gruesomes is game that pits two-person teams against each other. Both team members tee off, then the other team gets to choose which of the drives your side has to play. Obviously, they’ll choose the worst – or most gruesome – of the two drives. From there you can play any scoring format.

Las Vegas

as Vegas is another foursome game that pits two teams of two against each other. Each golfer plays his or her own ball, and the team’s two scores are combined on each hole to give them a “point value”. But here’s the catch, they aren’t added but strung together, with the lowest score always in front. So let’s say the scores of one team are four and five, so the team score is 45 (not nine). Set a money value for each point, and then the difference is paid.

For instance, the paired score for Team A on one hole is 35 and the paired score for Team B is a 45. If they were playing for $1 per point, Team B owes Team A $10 for that hole. Just a warning: winnings and losings can add up very quickly in this game.

Rabbit

Rabbit is a game that can be played with two to four people. The first player to have the low score on a hole captures the Rabbit (no ties). If on the next hole someone other than the holder of the Rabbit is the low scorer, the Rabbit is set free. Then the Rabbit can be won by the next player to earn the lowest score (again, no ties) on a hole. Before another player can be “holder of the Rabbit” it must first be set free. You can also skip this step and give the rabbit immediately to the winner of each hole.

It’s up to the players on how they to set the bets, but the most popular one pays the holder of the Rabbit after the ninth and 18th hole.

Garbage

Garbage or Dots or the Dot Game (also known as Junk or Trash) is a compilation of lots of little bets. These can include things such as birdies, longest drive on a hole, closest to the pin on a hole which warrants positive points; things such as double-bogeys and hitting into water subtract points. Each point is worth a set amount. Add up the points at the end of the round and pay up. Other forms of Junk come in terms that sound made up – because they are – such as sandies (up and down out of the sand), barkies (hitting a tree and still making par), chippies (chipping in from off the green), or fishies (making par after hitting in the water).

Good luck!
